NEW MEXICO:
Returning starter at safety who enjoyed a strong Division I debut last year after transferring from Mississippi Delta Community College (Moorhead, Miss.)...was a quick learner of much of the Lobos complex defensive scheme and displayed an excellent combination of speed and power...appeared to get more and more comfortable with the speed of the game each week and could be a real force in the secondary this fall...struggled a bit during the past spring practice season, largely due to a hand injury he suffered in week two...will face some strong competition during preseason camp from a host of hungry players in a deep safety group...improved dramatically in the weight room during the offseason, establishing himself as one of the strongest safeties in the program...upped his bench by 45 pounds (320), his incline by 35 (255) and his squat by 35 (475)...has also clocked at 4.5 in the 40 according to his junior college coaches.
2004 (JUNIOR):
Turned in a strong year and really started to come into his own during the final stretch of the season...appeared in 11 games, starting 9 times opposite Josh Bazinet...helped to fill the void in the safety rotation when senior Kevin Walton was out early in the year with an injury and established himself as the best among the large crop of new UNM safeties...very solid in run support and really improved his pass coverage...physical player who did not miss many tackles...38 stops on the year (25 solo), 3 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 6 pass break-ups and 3 QB hurries...did not play at UNLV...
vs. Wyoming...Turned in one of his best games of the year...finished with 4 tackles and got in on 2 tackles for loss...teamed with Nick Speegle to bring down Cowboy QB Corey Bramlet in the end zone for a 1st quarter safety...also notched two nice PBUs, knocking the ball away from WR Jovon Bouknight on a 3rd-and-5 play and hitting Bramlet as he threw on the run...
at BYU...Solid afternoon in the secondary to help an excellent overall defensive performance by UNM...4 sure tackles (3 solo) in 56 snaps...also broke up a 3rd-and-13 pass in the 3rd quarter with a big hit on the BYU receiver as the ball arrived...
vs. San Diego State...Strong performance after spending the previous game on the sidelines...tallied 4 tackles and was credited for a 21-yard sack when he forced Aztec QB Kevin O'Connell into an intentional grounding penalty in the 2nd quarter...the sack knocked SDSU out of field goal range on a 3rd-and-5 play, helping keep the Aztecs scoreless in the 1st half...started the game and played 46 snaps, helping the stingy Lobo defense limit SDSU to 146 yards, 259 below its season average, and 1 late TD...
at Oregon State...Solid effort, tallying 5 tackles (4 solo), 1 TFL and a QB hurry...52 defensive snaps off the bench...
vs. Texas Tech...Made a few assignment errors in coverage, but overall turned in a solid performance...recorded 8 stops and two PBUs in 86 defensive and specialt teams snaps...was in the starting lineup as the Lobos' opened with a 2-3-6 package.
MISSISSIPPI DELTA CC:
The team's third-leading tackler...the Trojans finished first in the Mississippi State Junior College Athletic Conference in total defense and pass defense...played for head coach Jay Miller...former Lobo LB Gary Davis, a first team All-MWC performer in 2001, also attended Mississippi Delta...Brown had NCAA Div. I-A basketball offers out of high school
HIGH SCHOOL:
A 2002 graduate of Shaw (Miss.) HS where he lettered in football, basketball, track and cross country...offensive player of the year at wide receiver his senior season...played for head coach Randy Ball...also the Hawks' basketball MVP...received the Superintendent Award, given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA
