Carlson Honored As MWC Player Of The Week
April 17, 2006 Junior designated hitter/first baseman Chris Carlson and right-handed TCU sophomore Sam Demel were named Mountain West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. This is the second career weekly award for Carlson and the first for Demel. Carlson, from Topeka, Kan., hit .611 (11-for-18) from the plate with six home runs, three doubles, 14 RBI and 10 runs scored as the Lobos went 3-1 last week, including a three-game sweep of Air Force. He hit at least one home run, and tallied multiple hits, RBI and runs scored, in all four games played last week. Carlson opened the week going 2-for-3, with two home runs two RBI and two runs scored in a 14-7 loss to Texas Tech. In game one vs. Air Force, Carlson went 3-for-4 with a grand slam, a double, five RBI and three runs scored in UNM's 23-11 win. In game two vs. the Falcons, he went 3-for-5 with two more homers, a double, three RBI and three runs scored, and finished the series going 3-for-6 with a home run, a double, four RBI and two runs scored. Demel, a Spring, Texas, native, collected a win and a save in three relief appearances for the Horned Frogs last week. In 5.2 innings on the mound, he gave up no runs and one hit, while striking out six and walking two batters. Demel's first appearance on the week came vs. then-No. 16 Oklahoma, where he took the mound with a runner on third and nobody out and struck out the only batter he faced. In his next appearance in game two vs. UNLV, he came on in the top of the ninth to shut down the Rebels' rally and collect his second save of the season in TCU's 9-7 win. In the final game of the series vs. UNLV, Demel pitched the final 4.2 innings of the game, striking out five and giving up one hit in the Horned Frog's 3-2 victory.
