Former Lobo standout Derek Mackel is in his second year as a member of the New Mexico coaching staff, helping Mario Wilson train the pole vaulters. Mackel established himself as one of the greatest pole vaulters in UNM history as a senior, winning the 2006 Midwest Regional Championship with a meet record vault of 18-01.00, which ranks No. 2 all-time at New Mexico. He advanced to both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in `06 and was a three-time all-Mountain West Conference honoree during his career. A product of Albuquerque Sandia High School, Mackel was a remarkable success story at UNM, working his way from marginal walk-on to one of the top pole vault threats in the country. During his five years in the program, he improved by more than five feet. Mackel, 25, graduated from New Mexico in May of 2006 with a B.A. in University Studies. |
