Like all of our loyal Lobo fans, I was disappointed to hear that starting running back Rodney Ferguson and reserve running back Mike Love were declared academically ineligible for the New Mexico Bowl on Saturday. This game will have the type of atmosphere that every athlete dreams to be a part of and it is unfortunate that these two young men will not have the opportunity to participate.
That said, it is important to understand the role that academics plays in the development of our student-athletes. Lest we forget amidst the deafening cheers and applause of collegiate sports fans, these young people MUST BE students AND ATHELTES. It is a privilege to take the field or court, one that is granted when, and only when, a student meets academic requirements. It is important for Rodney and Mike to take care of business in the class room so that they are able to compete for us next fall. I believe they will.
The New Mexico Bowl provides a national stage for the University of New Mexico and its football program. This game is a chance to showcase the extraordinary talents and sportsmanship of two institutions striving to compete at a national level. I believe our fans will recognize this and have University Stadium filled to the top with excitement and pride.
Good luck to coach Rocky Long and his Lobos when they square off against the University of Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday, December 22nd at 2:30 PM. Tickets are still available for the game. Call (505) 925-LOBO or go to www.unmtickets.com to reserve yours!

Congratulations to coach Steve Alford and his staff for their win against Texas Tech on Saturday. This victory over the legendary coach Bob Knight is yet another chapter to add to Lobo Basketball's storied history. The Pit provides such a great atmosphere for basketball, and it was no different this past weekend as 17,000 fans helped get the Lobos off to a great start.
I was especially encouraged by the turnout of our students. These fans are a key piece in the development of our athletics programs and I hope this loyalty and support continues to grow with each and every game.
It is an exciting week for UNM Athletics as our Rio Grande rival, New Mexico State, will be here Wednesday night in another matchup with big-time atmosphere potential.
Our women's basketball team will take on fifth-ranked Stanford on Tuesday night. Coach Flanagan has consistently challenged those nationally ranked programs that garner a lot of media attention. I believe Coach Don Flanagan and his staff will have this team prepared for the competitive contest tomorrow night.
I challenge all fans to come witness this for themselves and help provide an environment that is conducive to winning. Don't forget, the women take on "Round 2" of the Rio Grande Rivalry presented by Route 66 Casino Friday night at The Pit against New Mexico State.
